Emerging farmers in Ngwathe are receiving a much-needed boost as the municipality steps up efforts to strengthen local agriculture, support livestock production and unlock economic opportunities across its five towns.
On Friday, 16 October 2026, Ngwathe Local Municipality distributed animal feed and medication to emerging farmers occupying municipal commonage land, providing support for livestock farming and reinforcing the municipality’s commitment to sustainable agricultural development.
The initiative was led by Municipal Manager Dr Futhuli Mothamaha, accompanied by Dr Sive Dintsi, Director of Spatial Planning and Economic Development, and Tladi Motshoikha, Director of Corporate Services, alongside departmental managers and municipal officials.
Through the municipality’s Economic Investment and Business Development Unit, formerly known as Local Economic Development (LED), farmers received feed and medication for cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and chickens. The assistance was extended to commonage farmers across all five towns within the municipality.
Addressing the farmers during a briefing session, Dr Mothamaha said the prevailing economic challenges made it essential for the municipality to engage agricultural entrepreneurs and identify practical interventions to support their operations.
He emphasised the importance of collaboration between the municipality and local farmers in addressing challenges that threaten agricultural sustainability and economic growth.
Dr Dintsi said the initiative formed part of the municipality’s broader developmental efforts to empower economic role-players and strengthen their contribution to Ngwathe’s economy.
He highlighted the importance of supporting emerging farmers in building sustainable agricultural enterprises that can contribute to local economic growth, improve livelihoods and create employment opportunities.
By investing in commonage farmers, Ngwathe Local Municipality aims to strengthen agricultural production, support rural livelihoods and create an enabling environment for emerging entrepreneurs to grow their businesses.
The initiative underscores the municipality’s commitment to translating local economic development plans into practical interventions that directly benefit communities.
